The story is at bit slow at times but once it gets into the meat of the excitement, it really gets moving and I found it hard to put the book down at times. Ed Greenwood was initially a writer for TSR, the company that developed and marketed the first ever roleplaying game, Dungeons and Dragons. Why or why not? Every aspect of this novel and the subsequent novels in the first and additional series are exceptional listening.

More from the same Author: What made the experience of listening to The Temptation of Elminster the most enjoyable? Thanks for telling us about the problem. If the book had more detail it would have been better as a whole. Beware, JFi – I may yet dupe you into reading Trekkie slash-fic. I enjoyed the first two elminsters books but this one was so hard to follow.

Elminster: The Making of a Mage

John Pruden did an excellent job with the countless voices and narration. Preview — Elminster by Ed Greenwood. Thanks to audio books I get too catch up on some 011 that I’ve been putting off for awhile now.


And to be honest, there wasn’t as much history in it as I was hoping for. Making of a Mage was much much better.

Elminste very enjoyable read, which reads like a hard R high fantasy bildungsroman, marred only slightly by a supporting character who is a literal deux ex machina, eljinster that doesn’t divert from the likability of the protagonists or the book. Literally, the last few pages.

He is drawn into the clutches of the mysterious and sinister Lady of Shadows. You owe it to yourself to listen to this, the very first in the series.

They live in hiding from the uncle as outlaws or somthing. Greenwood should have had a better writer, and with more distance and less love of the character, 10 this. There is a really long battle sequence here that involves a lot of arrows and hiding and sneaking. Despite having nothing other than Elminster and SkyMall magazine to read during takeoff and landing I officially, disgustedly, completely gave up on Elminster on page ; wherein Elminster gets turned into a girl and is SO totally diggin’ the boobs, man.

First of all there was a very strong distinction between good and evil. This wasn’t the first thing I read by Greenwood and I will admit that I am not a big fan of 011 work. He gives up his thrown to one of the more noble side characters, and goes on his way Too much stuff was squeezed in, there were too many one-dimensional characters that I didn’t care about, and it was too much effort to figure out what was going on at times, especially at the climax of the Before I started this book, I read some of the bad reviews and I foolishly thought, “It can’t be that bad!


Whatever he decides, the Realms will be forever changed…. I stuck through the first two chapters of this book but couldn’t bring myself to spend any more time on it. Now, I just read that Greenwood himself didn’t really like this book and that he had to write it in a really short time and had to make the character a fightr, elminxter, cleric, mage cause thats what TSR wanted.
