Fup’s life was also only marked by a single event which immediately preceded his first encounter with Tiny. Don’t talk to Granddaddy Jake about absinthe! No wonder he stays put! It’s not as well known or famous as Fup, but it was a more memorable and satisfying read, for me.

There are things I don’t need to get, like why the sky is blue and plants are green – that sorta stuff really never troubles me that much – but books, TV shows, movies, art, all that creative crap, yeah, I need to know why? But his constant companion is a tub of 1, benzedrine pills, which do nothing for his navigational skills. This is one of my all time favorite books.

Jim Dodge is the king of modern-day rock and roll tall tales. It’s funny that Lockjaw is always rooting in the earth, destroying what he can, while the duck, Fup, has wings but will not fly.

The didge where Grandaddy Jake tries to teach Fup to fly and ends up losing the few teeth he has left is hilarious, and the one where financial ruin for our threesome is luckily prevented by the foolishness of a nirvana-seeking hippy left me in stitches. There is a duck. Was there some kind of spiritual message to it that I wasn’t getting? This I cannot explain. No trivia or quizzes yet.
