His method of teaching is pretty easy to understand, however, I am not a good source of info for this because of my background of knowing how to play the guitar, and previous banjo playing. While the videos are primitive, they are a necessary learning tool so that you do not fall into any bad habits in between lessons. Having gone through a lot of books, this is hands down the one to start with.

There are a surprisingly large number of books that will do a good job of clawhammer instruction. For the advanced player, there is instruction on more complicated picking, double thumbing, quick slides, fretted pull-offs, harmonics, improvisation, and more.
This little “intro” goes far beyond most of them in terms of taking you from simple clawhammer “bum ditty” strums to complex melodic runs and positions up the neck that are important for improvisation. What sets Ken’s book apart from several others I use is the approach he has taken to teaching the basics, and using tab and chord diagrams to convey melody plus frailing.
The combinationation of hearing the music and being able to see it on paper made learning difficult pieces doable, with some concentration thrown in.
I am glad to have purchased this instructional book. Each tape has a ton on songs and practice exercises so its taking me a while. The book and tape arrived, I pulled my banjo out of the closet and went to work. It sounded terrific, and I thought hmmm maybe I could do that.
